“When will you stop babying him?”
“He’s only a child, Leon. I intend to let him act like a child while he is one.”
It was an old argument between them. Elisa had grown used to hearing it from her father-in-law over the years; ever since Albert had turned nine and Leon had returned from Highland, he had taken more interest in the lives of his grandsons -- Albert in particular.
“He is eleven years old now. He should take his studies more seriously and stop being negligent with his education.”
“He is taking his studies seriously. Just because he isn’t the top student in his classes does not mean he’s ‘negligent.’” She aimed a glare at the blatant negative assumption. “And please stop telling me how to raise my children. I will raise Albert and Caesar according to my standards, not yours.”
“My standards are not the issue here; there are expectations that our family must meet, such as goals in life. He is old enough to begin deciding what he wants out of life, and no one has even brought this to his attention.”
“Why should an eleven year old have to worry about lifelong goals right now? His only worries should be his schoolwork and making friends.”
His reply was terse. “Because he is a Silverberg, and Silverbergs need to prepare for war their entire lives.”
No matter how many times she heard the statement, it still sent chills down her spine. She was well aware of the tradition, but she promised herself that she would defy her father-in-law’s stringent expectations for her children’s sake.
She continued to defy him for the rest of her life.

Caesar Silverberg had rehearsed numerous lines of greeting in preparation for this reunion. He had thought about every possible way that Albert could react to each greeting, and considered each inflection that could possibly work against him.
Still, he found himself struggling with a single sentence upon seeing the ever-taller redhead, whose face was a placid mask.
“It’s … been a long time.”
His brother’s gaze was as intensely indifferent as he remembered. “It has been, yes.”
Once again, Albert managed to make him feel childish -- even as he was reaching 30 years old. He looked away, wanting to say a million things to his brother, but unable to will the desire into an action.
And, once again, Albert put him out of his misery. “I see you have taken a wife; she opened the door for me.”
“Yes… Her name is Julia. She’s the light of my life.” He paused to rise from his seat and gesture for Albert to walk with him towards the hallway. “What about you? Ah … do you have a wife?”
“Her name is Alicia; she is the eldest daughter of Bishop Andrew.” It came as no surprise to Caesar that his brother had married Harmonian aristocracy; even with his rank as a military strategist, he would never be accepted into Harmonian society without proper marital connections. “And children?”
“We have a daughter named Apple … and Julia is due any day now.” Caesar beamed with pride at the thought of his children, his anxiety fading a bit. However, a glance at Albert’s unimpressed frown brought the nervousness back immediately. “And you?”
“One son and two daughters.”
When Albert did not volunteer his children’s names, Caesar decided it was for the best to let the topic slide. “Grandfather has been ill for months now. I… I would like to think he was waiting for you to arrive.”
“Perhaps he was.” There was a long silence as they reached the end of the corridor, and Caesar motioned his estranged brother towards the room that housed their ailing grandfather. “Has he told you his decision?”
“I think it’s only a matter of formality, Albert; we both know who he’s going to pick.” The knowledge somehow did not make him bitter. The passage of time had made him more receptive to the workings of family tradition and, though he still did not agree with his grandfather and Albert’s ways of thinking, he was able to be cordial with both.
Albert did not say anything as they disappeared into the room.

“Despite my early assumptions, you have grown into a capable man. Your dedication to our profession shows a great amount of your character, and you have made our family, and me, proud.”
“… Thank you, Grandfather.”
“Guide the family, spread our teachings, and never favor one member over the other… If there was ever a regret in my life, it would be my treatment of your brother. It was unfair and ultimately led to … an end no one would have ever imagined.” A ragged sigh. “I know that you will lead the Silverberg family to the best of your abilities.”
“I will, Grandfather.”
No matter how much Caesar wished otherwise, there was no escaping the truth of reality. With his father giving up his rights to become the next family patriarch, the responsibility had fallen upon the next generation. Nine years dead and buried, Albert would never be able to accept the role he had been born into.
With the passing of Leon, he had been appointed the patriarch of the Silverberg family. He had accepted the appointment as graciously as he could, and was slowly coming to terms with the weight of his position.
Still, at the back of his mind, he could not help but think…
This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.
