The things I do when I should be working...

Another little fic to add to my list...

Title: Successor
Fandom: Suikoden
Characters: A Harmonian and a President…
Prompt: Who?
Word Count: 848
Rating: 12+
Author's Notes: The year is IS 520.

Diplomatic relations with Harmonia? It was rather hard to comprehend. And here he was, 32 years old and in charge of the welfare of an entire nation. There were issues of the handling of border villages and security of political boundaries, as well as reparations for the skirmishes that were initially Harmonia's fault, to take into consideration.

His greatest concern was the effect of what an alliance with Harmonia would do to Dunan. Dunan had been a politically safe and trustworthy ally for nearly six decades, and he wished to leave that relationship intact by the end of the meetings.

"Mr. President, the representative from Harmonia is here to see you."

He straightened and looked up from the papers he had been staring at blankly. "Right now? Talks don't start for another few hours."

The assistant failed to hide a grimace. "He was quite insistent, Mr. President."

There was a pause before the president reluctantly nodded. "Send him in."

As the young woman nodded and retreated from the presidential suite, many thoughts ran through the president's head. What could he possibly want? Would there be attempts at extortion? Would there be--

"Excuse me for arriving so suddenly. I simply had to meet the one hand-chosen by the esteemed Tir McDohl to succeed him."

He rose to greet his guest out of habit, refraining from blinking in surprise at the youthful figure that walked in. Garbed in the robes of a Harmonian bishop, the brunet removed his cap and nodded in greeting. The man's reputation preceded him by far, but it was still a bit much to be meeting with a veteran general who appeared no older than 20.

"Bishop Sasarai. It's an honor."

The ageless rune bearer smiled placidly, waving off the bow the president had dipped into. "Please, no need for that, President Silverberg. I should be apologizing more for the intrusion."

It was hard not to pay attention to the man's calculating eyes, and the president gestured for the bishop towards one side of the office without breaking eye contact. With practiced grace, the Harmonian took a seat across from the chair the younger official soon occupied. "What is it I can do for you, Bishop?" he inquired. The height difference was less notable now that they were both seated.

"To be frank, I would like to get to know the man who has taken such an interesting position in the world, given his family's reputation. You have garnered a lot of public support as a leader for one with a background as a strategist."

So that was it. "I was only a strategist for my first few years out of Soledt. I have been involved in politics for quite sometime."

"Indeed--three years as a scribe under the secretary general, four as an assistant to the head chancellor, and then four years as a chamber representative for Gregminister. President was a far cry from your next career choice, wasn't it?"

Sasarai's dry tone as he listed off his resume spoke volumes about his opinions; the new president's competency clearly was a gray area in his mind. "I ensure you, Bishop, that my decisions will be sound and logical. Age and experience are not all that define a person."

"Perhaps not, but the potential that McDohl saw in you will not manifest overnight." Sasarai studied his rings as he spoke, missing but possibly predicting the president's flinch.

"I will rise above the expectations set before me." It was the same promise he had made to Lord Tir before when he had accepted the position. "Don't judge me too soon into my tenure."

The laughter that resounded through the room more befitted a schoolboy than a revered and sometimes-feared general. "You remind me of your father; you inherited more than his hair, so it seems. How is he these days?"

A well-placed cough covered the surprised look that flitted across the president's face. "Away in Dunan visiting an ill friend. But he is fine and still active."

"I'm sure he's matured since last I saw him to have such high-achieving children." Sasarai propped his chin on one hand, still smiling.

"Forty years will do that to a person," he confirmed with a slight nod.

Any further conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door, and the two turned to see a aquiline-nosed young man poke his head into the room. "Your Holiness."

"Wait for me outside, Iain." As the blond head disappeared behind the door again, Sasarai rose from his seat and confided, "As prompt as his grandfather. He amuses me."

A smile seemed like the best way to respond to the comment, and the president did so as he stood and walked the bishop to the door. "I look forward to our meeting this afternoon, Bishop."

"Be prepared for the worst, President Silverberg, because I intend to do as I see fit."

"I would expect nothing less." A warning from Sasarai would be best heeded.

And as the bishop exited the room, President Albert Silverberg was left to brood over the implications of the meeting.

Thank you to everyone that congratulated me in the last post. The interview went well and I was asked to send in writing samples. ^^
