Five sentences why I'm using this...?
Sometimes, if I'm really impressed with something that I color (usually for icons), I'll turn it into my desktop. I had my winged Leon picture as my desktop background for awhile, then I finished coloring this. It's Suikoden's Yuber as he would have appeared in a certain story I had outlined and shared with some friends a few years ago; one of them drew pictures of Nash, Sasarai, and Yuber as she imagined they'd looked, though she never colored in Yuber's pic. So, now that I'm a little more confident in my ability to color pictures, I thought I'd give it a shot. And there you have my desktop. :|
And for the Suikoden buffs, a ridiculously detailed idea of how the Scarlet Moon Empire was formed and how Julian Silverberg managed to handle a bloodless coup. It also goes on about Scarlet Moon politics up until IS 299 (Elenor's exile).
Most of this isn't official. It's mostly for reference for my drabbles.
The Silverberg Family
The Silverberg family was considered a minor Harmonian noble family prior to the Harmonian Civil War of IS 230. While not powerful or influential, the family was financially well-off enough to send children off to Harmonian schools for proper education. Some became minor statesmen and politicians, others teachers, and others strategists. Because of the caste system of Harmonia, the Silverbergs had difficulty climbing the ranks of high society and were beaten in the political arena by larger political families with stronger ties to the bishops.
A brilliant member of the family, Julian Silverberg, was employed by Kranach Rugner, a decorated knight of the army known as the Knight of the Scarlet Moon. The Harmonian Civil War provided Kranach Rugner with opportunity to unite dissatisfied minor nobles in the Toran region and take over the Holy City of Rupanda, the largest city in the region before one reached the Kooluk Empire to the south. Julian devised a set of political deals to distract corrupt officials while Kranach drew upon soldiers formerly under his command to support his push for complete arrest of the city’s defenses. Following the complete seizure of Rupanda, Julian issued a request to Harmonia: the region’s independence, in exchange for the Harmonian loyalists that would not integrate into a new government.
It was a risky decree, but not without understanding of the political climate of the continent. The Toran region sat south of the Kingdom of Dunan, a monarchy that had long managed to hold out against absorption into Harmonia. (It was believed that Dunan only kept Harmonia at bay for so long because there was no proof of a True Rune existing in the country.) With the region so far removed from the majority of the holy kingdom, Harmonia could not march soldiers out to Rupanda even if they could spare them. Julian acquired the assistance of the Dunan monarchy by having Kranach agree that the fledging nation would cede the land north of the Karakas desert.
Already struggling to quash the numerous uprisings in the country, and trying to retain the authority of the Circle Palace with the spreading rumors of Hikusaak’s death, the bishops agreed with Kranach’s terms and declared that the region was autonomous from the holy kingdom. Kranach accompanied the Harmonian loyalists to the shared border with Dunan, and then sent envoys with the group as they traveled through Dunan back up to land controlled by Harmonia. The bishops largely kept quiet to the fact that losing Rupanda meant losing the True Rune housed there: the Sovereign Rune, capable of suppressing magic and making its bearer immune to magic.
In the weeks following the bloodless coup, Kranach renamed the Holy City of Rupanda as Gregminster, the capital of the Scarlet Moon Empire. He granted Julian an impressive estate which would be passed down in the family according to the patriarch’s wishes.
The Scarlet Moon Empire would spend the next 22 years or so focusing on national growth and the shaping of its government, until the fall of the Kingdom of Dunan to the north in IS 252. (The Kingdom of Dunan was already struggling under weak leadership by the time of the Harmonian Civil War, but the formation of the Kingdom of Highland, a vassal state of Holy Harmonia under the Blight noble family, after the war drove the kingdom into ruin. The City-States of Jowston, formed out of the city-states that had splintered away from the weakening Dunan Kingdom, had only hostile relations with Highland and the Scarlet Moon.
While the City-States of Jowston bordered the Scarlet Moon to the north, the Kooluk Empire bordered it to the south. The Kooluk Empire, expanding southward to the end of the continent, controlled a vast amount of waterways, making it almost impossible for the Scarlet Moon to trade off-continent. In the 50 years following the formation of Jowston, the Scarlet Moon would expand further and begin encroaching on Kooluk’s border villages. By the end of the century, with the Scarlet Moon growing stronger and Kooluk’s government falling apart, the border was so well-controlled that Scarlet Moon nobles would attack Kooluk border villages as a “human-hunting” sport.
In IS 299, this would lead to a tragedy that resulted in the disappearance of a Scarlet Moon officer and the exile of his superior, the strategist Elenor Silverberg.
And more "blah blah blah" Silverberg stuff, this time about the Silverberg estate and the patriarch of the family. There's some references to the Scarlet Moon historical stuff from the above cut, too.
Notes:
The patriarch, as of IS 475 (Suikoden III), is Leon Silverberg. Leon is the younger of two brothers, the elder being Johnathan, the father of Mathiu and Odessa. Leon is 11 years younger than his brother. Being the elder brother, Johnathan was naturally thought to be the next patriarch of the Silverberg family, and he resided on the estate. However, Johnathan and his wife were killed in a carriage accident while Mathiu and Odessa were still young (12 and 3), so Leon moved into the estate along with his young son, George (1).
Mathiu leaves the manor to attend Soledt, and Odessa and George grow up together under Leon’s care. Mathiu returns to the empire and becomes an imperial strategist, soon earning the attention of General Kasim Hazil. (The two years between Mathiu’s return to the Scarlet Moon and the Succession War is when Odessa learns from him.) The Succession War breaks out when Mathiu is 23, and the borders close down; Odessa is unable to leave the country to attend school abroad, and so attends finishing school within Gregminster. When Leon is called away to assist in the Succession War, Odessa and George are looked after by manor servants.
Leon returns to Gregminster with the end of the Succession War, now Barbarossa’s chief strategist. However, this doesn’t last long, as war breaks out against Jowston only two years after the end of the war. With national morale terribly low and the war threatening to drag on for years, Leon orchestrates the highly controversial plan that would lead to the Kalekka Incident. While commoners were largely unaware of what truly happened, the internal fallout was huge; General Georg Prime resigned and left the country, Mathiu left the army and refused to return to Gregminster, and Leon was alienated from the other generals. Shortly thereafter, Leon left Barbarossa’s employ and, after having words with Odessa (now living alone in the manor with George away at Soledt), began residing in Kalekka.
For approximately one year, the Silverberg manor is without any Silverberg residents; with Mathiu in Seika, Leon in Kalekka, George in Crystal Valley, and Odessa moving out as a statement against her uncle’s actions, there is no one living there. George returns to the manor after leaving Soledt early, forced to think of his priorities with a young bride and child already on the way. So, while Leon is the patriarch of the Silverberg family, his son retains control of the manor in Gregminster. As such, George raises his family in Gregminster (except during the Toran Liberation War/Gate Rune War, when he had left for the Island Nations with his wife and son to avoid fighting against Odessa).
