Vacation

Well, I've got my final for summer quarter tomorrow, and then I'll be leaving (almost immediately afterwards) for California. I don't know exactly how long I'll be gone, but the original plan was for an entire week; things have been changing within the last 24 hours, but I think we're pretty solid on our plans now.

So I'll be gone for a week. This means that I won't be around for RPing, chatting, or even writing, really. Just a week to relax, recover, and suffocate in a car.

Posting a bit of a fanfic that was started ages ago and is now kicking around again. It features everyone's favorite Harmonian boys post-Suikoden III.

Prologue:
There’s Something Wrong…

He felt disoriented as he staggered forward, leaning against something broad and solid for support. It took him a few moments to realize his support was a wall and that he was staggering through a hallway, and he groaned in pain as he fought the urge to fall to his knees. He could not recall what he had been doing before or why every muscle in his body ached terribly, and he sank to the floor in confusion as he tried to remember something … anything.

There’s something wrong…

A shudder ran through him as he concentrated on the thought, gripping his arms anxiously and trying to analyze his situation. Why was it so difficult to concentrate? His mind was his greatest asset, and if his ability to think was hampered in some way…

What happened?

That was the more important question, wasn’t it? What had happened prior to him realizing he was walking? He blearily looked at his dark surroundings, spying candles on the wall that seemed unusually distant. The corridor grew darker in either direction, the candles on the walls becoming pinpoints the farther away they were from him.

“Help… Is anyone there?”

Was that his own voice? It was unrecognizable… He leaned his head heavily against the wall, swallowing and working his jaw. His eyelids ached… Maybe if he rested a bit, he could continue searching for answers later…

“Is someone there?”

His eyes slowly averted to the direction the voice originated from, and he squinted to make out a figure walking out of the semidarkness and towards him. The figure wore armor with familiar sigils and colors, carrying a halberd over one shoulder as he marched forward and towards him. Though he did not recognize the man, he was immediately comforted by the presence of another person, especially one that seemed to be coming to his aid.

“Sir?” The man’s pace quickened, the string of urgency in his voice alerting him that the newcomer recognized him.

The man was getting closer now, and it was easier to make out the features of the armor. His memories were starting to come back, and he recognized the man as a type of soldier -- a templar of the palace. He was in the palace…

“Sir, can you hear me?”

Despite his confusion, he inwardly bristled at the question. Of course he could hear him. The man continued repeating the question, followed by similar questions, and he felt his patience waning. Why wasn’t the soldier getting help? Why was he flapping his jaw and asking questions that weren’t getting them anywhere? He wanted to get out of this hallway… Away from this man.

And yet…

There’s something wrong…

With a strength he certainly did not feel, he reached up and grabbed hold of the man’s shoulders.

“Sir?!”

… Isn’t there?

Darkness consumed him.

[Unfinished] Chapter 1:
A Problem Arises

“Sir? Sir Clovis, your presence is requested.”

He paused in the middle of buttoning his shirt to look in the direction of his door. Summons at this hour were unusual, even considering his line of work. Tapping at the top button of his high-necked collar, the 37-year-old quirked a whimsical smile and ignored the guard.

If it was important, they would have emphasized that the bishops requested his presence.

“Sir, it’s an emergency. We had a breach of security and a murder.”

Nash sighed and looked upward, above his mirror and towards the skylight. So much for a peaceful day.

“Explain to me again why you requested my presence when you already have Addison and Vilhelm working on this?”

“You know as well as I do that a security breach in the Circle Palace is dangerous,” intoned Dios, walking alongside the intelligence operative. He clearly had not gotten enough sleep; his hawkish appearance actually appeared frazzled, and his cufflinks were still undone. “Bishop Fremone is handling the investigation, but Bishop Sasarai wanted someone to be supervising.”

“And I got the short straw.”

“Quite.” They stopped in front of one of the many conference rooms, Dios taking a moment to fix his cufflinks. “Bishop Sasarai will be expecting a report before he takes dinner. Consider yourself lucky it does not have to be written.”

“Yet.”

“Yet,” relented the younger Harmonian, nodding once. “Do you have any questions?”

“Just one.” Nash rubbed his forehead, his brows furrowed together. “Any chance I can get my meals covered for this?”

“… Do you have any relevant questions?”

“Oh, I see how it is. Someone gets murdered in the palace and suddenly no one’s footing my food bill anymore.” Nash feigned an affronted sigh, taking a few steps down the hall as Dios opened the door to the conference room. “And a good day to you too, sir.”

With a simple shake of his head, Dios watched the other depart.

Click. Click click.

“Poor Albert. Did you not get enough sleep last night?”

Click. Click.

“I’m afraid not, sir. I was not expecting Bishop Cecil’s reports to take as long as they did.”

Click. Click. Click. Click click.

“Oh, that’s right. I’d forgotten you were under him now. How is he?”

“Quite well. His eldest daughter has just had her first child, and his son has announced his engagement.”

Click click. Click.

“Hmm… I’ll have to remind Dios to remind me to send his daughter a gift. She’s a good girl.”

“Have you known Bishop Cecil and his family long, sir?”

Click.

“Not really. Oh, look, Albert – I finished this puzzle.”

“… Congratulations, Bishop.”

Here's hoping I write some more during my trip. Nash (especially Journeyman!Nash) has been running around my brain lately.
