Damn raccoons...

We had a visit from two raccoons tonight.

They tried to kill our pets.

Long rambling ahead. Cursing, rambling, whatever. I can't think straight...

My dad thinks they tried to go for the lovebirds' (Edelweiss, PJ, Sunny, and Tiny's parents, Pear and Peach) cage first. It's big and partly-covered by a blue tarp so the birds can hide fromthe wind, and the tarp was shredded up. But the cage itself was made out of metal, so they couldn't get them.

Then they moved over to our budgies' aviary... Dad couldn't see where they got in because it's so dark, but one raccoon had gotten in and scared the birds and guinea pigs.

My little brother and I were in his room at the time ... maybe 12:40 or so. His window was wide open, and he heard high-pitched squealing over his Resident Evil 4. Mind, his window faces one corner of the house, and the aviary was on the other corner of the house... I was on my laptop in his room and when he paused the game I could hear the squealing, too. Then he bolted out of his chair and I jumped off his bed and we were running downstairs just thinking "Oh god oh god oh god" the entire way down.

My brother stomped his foot on the deck when we got out to the backyard deck. We both saw this raccoon -- HUGE raccoon -- jump up and head for one corner of the aviary, where it climbed up. I saw Emily -- our younger guinea pig -- run under the small tree the parakeets usually sleep under with their umbrella... The budgies were flying around and making noise... My brother leapt on the bench as if to make sure the raccoon wasn't going to move, then told me to keep the raccoon scared. Then he ran off, probably to get a weapon... I don't remember if he came back with a broom or what.

My mind was racing and I grabbed the hose that we use to fill the parakeets' birdbath and held it kinda like a flail or whatnot... Then the raccoon dropped back down into the aviary and I heard the guinea pigs squealing and I kinda lost it. I grabbed the sprayer on the hose and -- thank god that we hadn't turned the water off that night -- and sprayed at the damn raccoon. It wasn't even on the highest setting but I didn't notice -- all I could hear were the guinea pigs and the budgies and me hissing at the damn raccoon "Get the fuck out! Get the fuck OUT!" over and over again. I think my dad was at the door by then, and I remember faintly thinking what he must have thought about his daughter cursing out in the dark in the middle of the night like that.

The raccoon climbed up on the other side of the net and clawed its way out of the aviary, leaving a big gaping hole in the nylon net and I think that was when I just started shaking. My dad had stepped out by then and he was asking where the raccoon had gone and I think was just pointed out into the dark towards the front yard. Then I was heading down to the aviary and my brother was there and we were trying to look for the guinea pigs under the one outdoor light we had facing the aviary... I was so scared they wouldn't even be moving. I could see them, but they weren't moving.

My brother went into the aviary to check on guinea pigs... Cindy (our older guinea pig, given for my sister's birthday two years ago...) moved her head a little and tried to get away, but my brother was trying to get her... I kept saying over and over that she was moving and was wondering if she'd been bitten... Then I told him to check on Emily when Cindy ran back to her cage (which is also left open in the aviary so they can run around when they want) for shelter. Emily was okay... She wasn't hurt.

Cindy had been bitten by the fucking raccoon. It bit both her ears and the top of her head.

When my brother picked her up, she made that pitifully panicked squealing that we'd heard from his window and I just knew we'd heard her getting hurt by the raccoon. Gods. Gods...

I followed my brother in when he brought Cindy in, and he had me hold her so he could go and get Emily. Cindy made that squealing and weak squeaking and I just kinda stood there in the kitchen wondering what I could do with her. I was just dazed and at a loss.

Eventually (it must have been less than a minute, but it felt like forever) I went out to the foyer and started calling for my mom. She would know what to do -- she's a nurse, right? She could help Cindy... All I could see when I looked at my arms was Cindy's white and brown fur and these dark reddish-purple patches of blood on top of her ears. I called out to my mom, then slowly went upstairs with the whining Cindy in my arms and into my parents' room. I stood by the bed and just told her that the guinea pigs had been attacked.

Ugh... I'm getting drained now. I hovered nearby while my mom was tending to Cindy. That'd how I'd found out she had been bitten in each ear and the top of her head. She seems pretty sure that Cindy will survive the night, and I trust her opinion more so than my dad (he thinks it's likely she'll die). I've been worrying and second-guessing what my brother looked up on Wikipedia about rabies... According to what he read, rodents have a natural immunity to rabies and it's unlikely for them to get rabies...

I'm just hoping for the best. I hope she survives the night. I hope she won't get rabies. My brother setup their cage again and we put them back in it... Emily's okay and hovering near Cindy, but Cindy's still making those pained whines and it breaks my heart.

Ugh... I've been crying too much tonight.

POOR GUINEA PIGS! D: Raccoons are cute and all, but I like them less after reading this. What a bunch of jerks. I hope Cindy survives. :(

Though the hose episode made me laugh. I'm sorry. T_T
