What does it mean to be a Silverberg?

It had been one of his first questions when he met his grandfather for the first time. Surely he would give him a real answer, unlike his father that simply spoke of family pride and the works of a strategist. He knew there had to be a reason that the Silverbergs were literally known throughout the continent ... not by individual names, but as a family.

"To be a Silverberg is to be forgotten and remembered at the same time. That is the mantle that you will bear for the rest of your life, simply because you bear that surname."

He had not understood that. "How can we be both forgotten and remembered?"

"We, as a family, are famous because almost everyone with our blood becomes a strategist. But many will never rise up and carve their way into history. Your father will not be remembered when he dies. He is a peaceful man, and will not die in a war." He remembered those intense brown eyes boring into his own as the words reached his ears. "A Silverberg will only be individually remembered when he dies for a war. For a cause."

"But you're famous, Grandfather."

"I am not an ordinary Silverberg." Had there been bitterness in his voice at that time? He could not remember. "I am a 'genius,' by others' standards, much like Julian and Elenor many years ago. I am the first that is 'remembered' and sought out when war breaks out." A pause. "Perhaps it is best to die for a cause and be remembered for that."

"I ... I don't think anyone wants to die, though."

"No, I suppose not. That is why I suggest you get the idea out of your head of being a famous strategist, Albert. You will never attain fame without losing something."

He had understandably been hesitant to continue asking questions after that. "Is it wrong to seek out fame?"

"Wrong? What is 'wrong?'" His grandfather was truly a confusing man. "You must decide for yourself. You must justify your actions and be prepared for the consequences -- fame or notoriety."

How could fame be a bad thing? He had been young at the time, and could not properly digest everything his grandfather had said. But he knew that, above all else, he did not want to have to die to be remembered.

How terrible would it be to die without being remembered? How horrible would it be to know that you had never made a difference?

All I want is to know I'll be remembered when I die.

It had been an innocent desire at the time. The thoughts of a child who could barely remember his mother's face.

It became his mantra. His driving force in life. Fame. Not fortune -- just fame. He would not die for it, though. Anything but his life.

The desire would make him selfish, unethical, and corrupt.

"You will never attain fame without losing something."

In the end, Albert lost himself.
