He had never imagined that having a rune crystal attached could hurt. No one he had spoken to had mentioned rune attachment being a painful process.

Then again, no one he had spoken to had attempted to have a rune crystal attached to their forehead without extensive runic experience.

He hardly considered himself a rune user, much less an experienced rune user. He had only basic knowledge from back in Soledt, where they had gone through the lower elemental runes and extensive study of runic abilities.

Wearing a Lightning Rune was nothing like wearing a Pale Gate Rune, though.

As he sat back in his chair, he could feel his temples throbbing from the power emanating from the uncommon rune. He silently swore to himself that he would have the rune removed as soon as the ritual was over, as he would not be able to properly plan for a war campaign with the constant pain diverting his attention.

Wincing as he tilted his head forward, he stared down at the notes he had received from his grandfather. The neat and simple script belied the terrible knowledge it revealed to its reader. He had read the notes repeatedly, understanding that a mistake in such a dark summoning could -- and would most likely -- prove fatal.

"Through the opened gate, I touch the Empty World. Through the Empty World, I call upon the Eightfold itself. I offer my right to lead you to war. I offer my left to bear your mark. I offer a sacrifice that only you will choose. In return, you will obey my will and hear my words. We will remain bonded until the sacrifice has been made."

He was not so foolish as to utter the actual chant before he meant to perform the ritual; paraphrasing allowed him to analyze what he would be expected to do, and exactly what he would be able to order the demon to do.

His grandfather had not been very helpful when he had inquired about the black knight. It had taken a long conversation simply to learn about the "mark" the black knight would leave. Simply mentioning about the sacrifice had caused his grandfather to curtly remind him that the sacrifice was only known by the bonded two.

Though it was not much, knowing that his grandfather had gone through the ritual and survived was a comfort to him.

Green eyes lifted to seek out the setting sun beyond the windows, staring without truly seeing.

Night would be falling soon, and he would need all the comfort he could get.

At last, the mystery of Yuber-summoning solved! Pale Gate Rune... Now why didn't I think of that?
