He needed a moment to breathe--that was all. Entangled in her own frustration and anxiety, the young Queen had not spared her Commander of the Queen's Knights a second glance as he retreated from the audience chamber.

He would not sacrifice any physical show of weakness for his racing thoughts. There were still some loyal soldiers around, and he suspected Zahhak and Alenia would return shortly with reports. To show weakness now would show he acknowledged to the inevitable fall of Sol-Falena.

Not that he did not see it as a strong possibility.

He had always played with those--possibilities, probabilities, chances ... all of them. They brought a thread of amusement to his existence. Offer an opportunity for destruction and see where the selfish desires of humans landed them.

Having believed in selfish desires for so long himself, he had become able to analyze and manipulate those frailties of others.

"Lady Sialeeds is dead."

Alenia's words echoed through his head, and he briefly touched his forehead through the bandana he now wore. To think, here he was years after the fact, on the verge of losing everything his father had fought for, and he was still affected by that woman.

He had hoped to reach that lofty pillar of absolute fortitude in his lifetime, but had apparently failed.

Reflecting, he realized he had never seen her cry. She was royalty, after all, and the royal family had to protect their face. However, even in the dregs of deep despair or throes of utter rage, she had maintained that perfectly imperfect frown and glittering defiance he had always admired. All she had to do was toss that feathery mane of hers and cross her arms, and she was once again impregnable.

Once upon a time, he had abandoned familial ambition for the idealistic love so many enraptured young men sought. He had found it through a political engagement, but had not cared about the technicalities at the time. Infatuated, or perhaps truly in love, he had given his all to reach the royal heart. And they had enjoyed one another, finding genuine smiles amongst the sniveling nobles. It was a momentary bliss that remained locked within him to this day.

She had not wept when their engagement was dissolved. There was only sadness below the surface, lingering in her eyes as she explained the promise she had made to her sister and cousin.

Even in the face of losing love, she truly seemed invincible.

It was shortly after that he swore he would reach the same heights she had attained. He discarded his innocence and ideals for facts and probabilities, amongst other things. It was a dark and dangerous road--one that he believed would harden him enough to not succumb to such desires and feelings again. There was no rage as he interacted with Dolph, no desire to see him dead for so nonchalantly ending his mother's life. There was no sadness as he ordered Nether Gate to murder the royal family, save the young princess, in their siege of the castle. He thought that that act had proved he was beyond the despair of losing love.

But as his eyes burned with repressed sorrow, Gizel Godwin realized that he had never lost love until now.
