When I woke up, he was gone. The book he had read to me was on the shelf, the candle he had set on my bedside table taken away. My stuffed animals were neatly arranged on the shelf, as if I had never taken a few of them down and thrown them at him.
I shuffled over to his room, still rubbing the sleep from my eyes. His bed was neatly made, the extra blanket he preferred to sleep with noticeably absent. A few books had disappeared from his shelf, and his good shoes were missing from their place next to his dresser. His curtains were still drawn shut, the tassels still tied in a messy bow he had fashioned himself the night before.
I remember him saying "goodnight" before I fell asleep.
But I definitely don't remember him saying "goodbye."
So I did what any confused seven-year-old would have done.
I sat down and cried until someone found me.
