Posting in the middle of the work day. Nice.

NaNoWriMo's over. I managed a little over 6700 words. Pfft. But that's still more than I've written for one story in over a year, so I'm still proud of what little I did. I'll work on improving my writing habits so I can do better next year.

Under the cut is the first section of the story (Suikoden fanfic) I wrote for NaNo -- tentatively called "Shards" or "Chaotic Shards" for now. No editing, no revising; I just let the writing take me where it wanted to. It's interesting how the story became divided by perspectives along the way; it had happened before I realized it. I still need to decide if I'll post this thing once it's completed or in finished Revolutions.

There seemed to be a darkness upon the lake. Something festering and dangerous and simply waiting beyond their sight. It wasn’t something any of them spoke about as idle conversation; their thoughts were focused more on scouring the castle, looking for what was usable and what could be usable if salvaged. There were some very smart people in their midst, scrutinizing the unmanned stores, the old laboratory in the basement, and anything else they could on the first two levels. Even if they set aside their concerns about the disquieting quality of the lake, there was no boat on the dock. If they intended to leave the lake castle, they would need to gather the materials and build a boat or raft themselves.

So they remained stranded in the castle until they managed to organize themselves—which was easier said than done. They had among them men and women, leaders and followers, Scarlet Moon imperials and Harmonians. The three young ladies within the group boasted different leadership credentials; one was a rebellion leader, the second a knight captain, and the last a city mayor. The young rebel leader proved to be the most stubborn, the knight captain the most battle-capable, and the city mayor the most patient. Each offered different skills and would lead in different ways, meaning other aspects would need to be considered.

That was why Chris Lightfellow found herself contemplatively gazing out onto the lake while the others began sorting through the castle stores. Her two competitors had their own strengths, and they had backers as well, but she had somehow emerged as the winner.

Somehow. She gave a sidelong glance to her lone companion on the dock. Even though he had awoken on the island like the rest of them, Nash Clovis appeared as calm and confident as ever. He had undoubtedly swayed the others with that impeccably smooth acting of his, presenting the lady knight as a protector and diplomat who would surely be an example for them all. Without conferring with her, he had singlehandedly won her leadership of their little group and swept her outside so they could finally have a moment to themselves.

“What are you plotting?” The first words she had uttered since they had stepped out, already dark with suspicion.

Though his tone was jovial, Nash’s smile did not reach his eyes as he replied. “‘Plotting’ has such negative connotations. You don’t believe you are the best choice here?”

That is not my concern and you know it.”

“Correction: We know.”

She frowned sternly at the Harmonian, displeased by his continued vagueness. Had she really found his antics charming at some point?

Sensing he was exasperating Chris, Nash gestured broadly towards the sketch of water before them. “You have noticed by now, I’m sure. Our shared Dragon Knight acquaintance seems to be missing some muscle definition and height.”

“…Yes.” Chris lowered her eyes thoughtfully. She had recognized the crested headband the boy had worn. She had recognized the boy. “And that woman. Silverberg. Is she—?”

“Of relation to our precocious tactician, yes. A cousin 20 years deceased, if I’m not mistaken.”
Her mind reeled at this new information. Nash had stated his observation with a straight face, as if ignorant to how ludicrous it would come across. It took a great deal of focus to keep her voice low. “How—?

“I don’t know.” Even the admission was calmly stated. “I’m reminded of a strange place I visited, once. Nothing made sense there, either.” Metal clanked against metal as Chris shifted, gauntleted fingers curled into fists as she fought her frustration. But Nash was not quite done. “There’s a distinct lack of a hostess this time around, too.”

Sometimes it was best to ignore the man’s ramblings altogether. “So time has been displaced somehow, and we are in the Toran Republic, on Lake Toran.” She waited for Nash to nod in confirmation. “The nine of us, to our knowledge. Without a boat or…” Trailing off, Chris turned to face the castle and looked upward. Nash followed her gaze, waiting patiently for her to finish her thought. “Perhaps we can create a signal from the top of the tower.” Even as she voiced her thought, Chris found herself thinking of the unnatural churn of the lake. She was not familiar with the geography of the area, but there was something awfully wrong with the waters surrounding the castle. It took her a moment to refocus her attention on her initial question of Nash. “You still haven’t answered why you pushed so hard for my leadership.”

“If the others are who they say they are, we are the furthest along in our timeline. They should be more willing to hear out your explanations now that you’re in a leadership position.” Chris frowned at his emphasis on her explaining the strange situation. “That, of course, is not the only reason.”

The meaningful look he gave her right hand was understood immediately.

On curiosity's note: are we going to continue that Nina and Albert thread on her first post?

Yeah, sure -- I know I left it in a weird place. Lemme pull up the thread and I'll get to it.
